Fed Reduces Interest Rates for Second Time This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority cut interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second rate cut this year during economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The move to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Inflation has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Impacts Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve typically analyzes labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, including the count of employment gains added to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in early September, before the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The number of jobs added to the economy in August was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Private Data Indicate Continued Decline

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish September’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its release when the closure started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the private sector cut 32,000 positions in September, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated recently, a trend he had previously attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase

Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still released its price statistics for September that indicated that costs are going up, although gradually. Costs rose three percent over the last year, the highest since January. In spring, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
